Frida Kahlo Pocket Gallery
Immersive Frida Kahlo needed help bringing Frida’s art to life in a new way that would engage viewers. We created an interactive web AR experience that brings Frida's dominant gaze, and the surreal environmental elements that are ever present in her work to life.
Role: Designer (Illustration, Concepting, UI, Branding)
Team: Oscar Ma (Creative Lead/Design Director), Bobby Fata (Technologist), Jenny Pachucki (Copywriter), Nathan Phillips, Dave Kalvert,
Taylor Milana, Christine Austin, Tan Hamilton, Michael Murdock, Austin Donnelly, Shane Hunt, Spencer Cook, Declan Johnson
Illustrated Markers
Each marker was designed to highlight symbolic imagery from each featured artwork. They were carefully illustrated to retain Kahlo’s original line work and colors from each piece.
Artwork
As you explore the 3D paintings, Frida's eyes follow you. These 3D renditions of Frida's artwork were approached sensitively. Nothing was altered as the elements within each painting were brought to life with animation and sound effects. This multidimensional translation spotlights various symbols found in her art. Thoughtful sound effects were added to enhance the experience.
UI
A simple UI was deigned to make the artwork stand out and the web experience easy to use while keeping the branding.
Social Experience
Part of the web experience invites the user to take a selfie that highlights the importance of Frida’s powerful gaze. Present throughout her work, Frida Kahlo frequently painted herself looking out with a powerful gaze that invites viewers to connect and sympathize. We invited attendees to give their own gaze in one of three portraits.
